5 Simple Ways to Reduce Anxiety

Anxiety often arrives as a wave — sudden, loud, and hard to think through. You do not have to wait for it to pass on its own. Small, repeatable actions can lower the volume.
Start with your body. A slower exhale than inhale tells your nervous system it is safer than it feels. Try four counts in, six counts out, for two minutes. If thoughts rush in, let them. Return to the next breath.
Name what is happening without arguing with it. “I notice anxiety” is different from “something is wrong with me.” WAVES check-ins exist for this: one honest word, once a day, builds a map of what actually helps.
Move, even a little. A walk, stretching, or washing a cup gives restless energy somewhere to go. Then write three lines — not a perfect journal, just what feels true tonight.
Reach toward people when you can. A message, a Circle, or sitting with someone in silence still counts. You do not have to explain everything to deserve company.
WAVES is here for the quieter work between those moments: breathing, tracking, talking, and a community that understands. If you are in crisis, skip the app and use emergency or Samaritans support — we list those on our Support page.
